MANILA, Philippines - Consumers should brace themselves for higher electricity bills this month.

Manila Electric Co (Meralco) announced it is collecting P0.18/kWh in generation charge and transmission charge for September.

Meralco officials said electricity prices in the wholesale electricity spot market soared while transmission fees also spiked for this period.

For those consuming 200 kWh, the increase in electricity bills is almost P35; for 300 kWh users, it is P52; for 400 kWh users- it is P69; and for 500 kwh users, it is P87.

The higher electricity rates were announced just a few days after the wage board approved a P10 hike in minimum wage.

Trade Union Congress of the Philippines spokesman Alan Tanjusay said their member groups are already preparing for a protest action against the small salary hike.

According to Tanjusay, aside from power rates, consumers are also about to be affected by the impending hike in MRT-LRT fares, water rates and SSS premiums.
