ILOILO CITY -- Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has filed for a 15-day sick leave starting September 11 until end of the month, putting an end to questions whether or not the local chief executive will resume office.
“This is to inform the public that Mayor Mabilog had already filed for sick leave up until the end of the month,” confirmed spokesperson, Lawyer Mark Piad on Wednesday, adding that the mayor is suffering from Diabetes Mellitus Type 2.
Piad said Mabilog “needs additional time” for follow up tests in other institutions abroad “because of the stress the good mayor had gone through.”
“He needs time to heal himself,” he added although he stressed that his condition “is not serious.”
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has left for Japan last week of August for a seminar on disaster risk reduction (DRR) organized by the Citynet –Yokohama where he talked about “Mainstreaming DRR within City Governments.”
He proceeded to Melaka, Malaysia from September 6- 9 for the Urban Environmental Accord (UEA) Summit where he talked about the Iloilo River Project during the presentation of best practices.
“Rest assured that he will definitely come back,” he added.
The mayor’s foreign travels happened amid the supposed transfer of Chief Inspector Jovie Espenido to Iloilo upon the order of President Rodrigo Duterte. The President labeled Mabilog as supporter of a drug lord and called Iloilo as “shabulized” and “bedrock of illegal drugs.”
Piad, meantime, said that “they have no credible reason to believe that there was security threat on the part of the mayor.”
With the mayor on leave, Vice Mayor Jose Espinosa III will continue to assume as acting mayor of Iloilo City, he said.
In an interview, Espinosa said that they have a lot of things to do in running the city government.
Right now, there is a need to review the proposed 2018 budget of Iloilo City that is supposed to be submitted to the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) for approval by October 15.
Other concerns are emergency response, peace and order, business sector, benefits for city hall employees and delivery of services to the vulnerable sectors, among others. (PNA)
