BAGUIO CITY, August 7 – The city hall’s façade will be garbed with yellow, blue, red and white lights, depicting the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) colors starting Tuesday night in time for the simultaneous nationwide lighting of landmarks in 50 cities and provinces of the country.
Mayor Mauricio Domogan on Monday ordered city officials and their staff to attend the activity in support to the golden anniversary celebration of the ASEAN at the city hall. “Rain or shine, we will proceed and we expect as many to attend the celebration.”
The mayor had earlier issued a memorandum to all the departments for all personnel to attend the grand event on August 8 and celebrate with the whole country and the ASEAN region the 50th year anniversary of the creation of the regional organization, which the Philippines is hosting this year.
Earlier, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte also urged the different departments in the government to participate and help in the promotion of the ASEAN, and reap the benefits of the country’s membership in the organization.
The city government will have the lighting of the giant lantern of the ASEAN which at this time is already hanged between the two center pillars at the front of city hall. There will also be the Philippine Information Agency Cordillera (PIA-CAR)-initiated flotilla at the lake in Burnham Park which is supported by the city government.
The flotilla will have ten boats carrying each member-country’s flag and the ASEAN flag with a lady clad in the national attire of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Laos PDR, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
The giant ASEAN logo, the primary symbol of this year’s ASEAN summits and the Philippine chairmanship will also be placed at the center of the lake, specifically where the foundation is, to demonstrate that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Day is an important celebration that commemorates the golden year of the regional organization.

Helen Tibaldo, PIA-CAR regional director, said Baguio will have Police Chief Inspector Kimberly Molitas, spokesperson of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) as the guest speaker who is expected to give a briefing on the ASEAN gains on peace and security at the international and national level within the ASEAN context and related updates.
Joma Rivera, city tourism officer, that aside from the colorful lights within the giant lantern, the four 25-foot high pillars at the front of the city hall and the façade of the whole building will bear the four ASEAN colors. “This will be lighted every evening up to the end of the year,” he said.
He said the anniversary is a milestone of the 10-member state regional organization, a historic event and the local celebrations will enhance awareness and appreciation of the ASEAN particularly its member-states' history, as well as opportunities and challenges. (PNA)
