Manila News: Car-related Crime
Following a spate of car theft incidents in the past weeks in Metro Manila, Land Transportation Office (LTO) chief Virginia Torres has vowed to cooperate fully with the police and other government agencies investigating on the possible involvement of some government officials in carjacking.
Torres has defended the agency over the allegation that some of its officials are conniving with carjacking syndicates who manage to register “hot carsâ€.
As early as December 29 last year, Torres already created a study group that will conduct an immediate review of all existing policies and requirements on motor vehicle registration “to determine if the requirements remain responsive to the timesâ€.
Torres developed a task force headed by Executive Director Redentor Reyes to investigate suspected staff involved in carnapping syndicate.
"There is no sacred cow, we conduct a proper investigation here, we give them due process of administrative and face criminal prosecution if they are found involved in carnapping," Torres said.
“I will look into it and I will see to it that my orders are complied with immediately†she stressed.
Torres maintained that the agency does not allow any vehicle registration without the necessary requirement including the macro etching clearance from the Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG).
"The LTO cannot register any vehicle without the requirement from the police and macro etching Clearance certificate from the PNP crime lab here a vehicle chassis number and filters the number of motor vehicles, so when you complete the requirements from the PNP, we can register the vehicle ," Torres explained. - pna
