CEBU CITY -- Some 100 families lost their homes as fire razed 86 houses in a relocation site in Barangay Paknaan, Mandaue City early Wednesday morning.
The fire broke out around 2:00 a.m. and quickly spread, prompting the Mandaue Fire Department to raise the fire alarm to Task Force Alpha. Fire trucks from neighboring cities of Cebu and Talisay, and Liloan town also responded.
Reports said the fire started at the house of a certain Estella Abad, which was allegedly intentionally burned by four unidentified men.
Fire investigators have yet to confirm the report but some of Abad’s neighbors claimed to have seen the four men set fire to the house and immediately fled.
Six people were reportedly injured in the blaze that lasted for more than an hour.
The Mandaue Fire Department placed the fire damage at PHP500,000.
Affected families are temporarily sheltered at the barangay’s covered gymnasium (LBG/Michelle Bugtai/PNA)
