LPA may bring floods, landslides; blue alert raised
« on: November 12, 2012, 08:35:15 PM »
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council raised a blue alert status on Monday in preparation for the possible effects of a low-pressure area (LPA) east of Surigao.

NDRRMC Executive Director Benito Ramos said that blue alert requires half of the agency’s personnel to be ready for contingencies.

Ramos also said that the personnel on duty should coordinate efforts to ensure zero casualty.

The NDRRMC particularly placed on alert Eastern Visayas, Caraga, and Regions 10 and 11.

The NDRRMC also said it has directed the disaster risk reduction and management councils at the local level to prepare local residents for evacuation if needed.

”Office of Civil Defense centers have been instructed to undertake precautionary measures in their respective areas of responsibility," the NDRRMC said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said that the LPA, spotted east of Surigao embedded along an intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), is threatening to bring rains that may cause flash floods and landslides in parts of the Visayas and Mindanao. - PNA
