Low pressure area looms off Surigao
« on: November 12, 2012, 08:26:53 PM »
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday that a low pressure area off east of Surigao dissipated Sunday evening after making a landfall but another LPA has formed in the same location.

“Nagdissipate na yung LPA sa east of Surigao around 8 p.m. Sunday pagkatapos maginteract sa kalupaan ng Mindanao and dahil sa intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) may nabuo ulit na LPA,” weather forecaster Fernando Cada explained.

An ITCZ is a merge of winds from different directions, which is also a breeding ground for a low pressure area (LPA).

As of 4 a.m. Monday, the LPA, which was embedded along the ITCZ, was spotted at 180 km east of Surigao City (9.5°N, 127.0°E) affecting Southern Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.

However, Cada said it has a slim chance to intensify into a tropical depression but it band of rain clouds is expected to bring moderate to heavy rains over Southern Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.

Cada said the Visayas and Mindanao and Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) and Bicol will be cloudy with moderate to heavy rainshowers and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

He added that the northeast monsoon or “amihan” will bring light rains over Cagayan Valley Region and the provinces of Aurora and Quezon.

The rest of Luzon including Metro Manila , will continue to have mix weather from sunny to cloudy skies with passing light rains mostly in the afternoon or evening due to localized convections in the next two to three days.

Meanwhile, Cada also said that the agency has monitored a new weather disturbance outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and has a potential to become a tropical cyclone.

“Itong bagong minomonitor natin na nasa labas pa ng PAR nasa karagatan ng Mariana Island, Guam ay posibleng maging bagyo sa mga susunod na araw,” Cada said adding the agency continues monitoring.

Once it becomes a tropical cyclone and enter the PAR, Cada said the first storm of the month will be locally named “Pablo”, the 16th tropical cyclone to enter the country this year.

He said that PAGASA is expecting two to three storms that may affect the country this month.

In its advisory, PAGASA said that moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Luzon and Visayas and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the northeast with slight to moderate seas. - PNA
