Leyte town waives water service fees due to health crisis
« on: April 25, 2020, 06:48:01 PM »
TACLOBAN CITY – Water consumers in Kananga, Leyte will only pay part of the full-service fees for March as assistance to locals affected by the global health crisis.

“The general community quarantine (GCQ) drastically affected the logistical capability of all residents in the municipality and further necessitates a greater consideration from the local government to ease up some payables that were regularly paid by them,” Mayor Manuel Vicente Torres said in a statement on Tuesday.

The local government approved Ordinance 22L-20-020, waiving the collection of fees for the first 10 cubic meters of consumption of each water consumer connected to the local government-run Kananga Waterworks System.

The ordinance covers both residential and commercial users and they would pay only the excess consumption.

Kananga town and the rest of Leyte province were placed under GCQ on March 16 as a mandatory precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

The directive has forced the closure of non-essential business establishments and affected small entrepreneurs.

In response, the local government has also decided to waive the rent of business owners at the town’s public market for March and April.

“With the declaration of (a) public health emergency in the country, we are enjoined to render full assistance and cooperation and mobilize the necessary resources to undertake critical, urgent, and appropriate response and measures in a timely manner to curtail and eliminate the Covid-19 threat,” Torres said.

The town remains free from the highly contagious disease, according to the Department of Health.Kananga, a first-class town in Leyte province, has a population of nearly 57,000 in 23 villages. It is approximately 78 km. west of Tacloban City, the capital of the Eastern Visayas region. (PNA)
