LEGAZPI CITY -- The city government of Legazpi is now operating a Class "AA" slaughterhouse, the biggest and most modern in the Bicol region, the regional office of the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) said.
NMIS executive director Ernesto Gonzales said Wednesday afternoon that with the new facility, consumers in the city and neighboring areas are assured of clean and safe meat.
The slaughterhouse also qualified the city as a supplier of meat to markets elsewhere in the country.
Gonzales noted that an abattoir that is given an "AA" grade by the NMIS is allowed to market its products anywhere in the Philippines.
There are three categories of slaughterhouses under NMIS guidelines: Class Triple A or top-grade abattoir, Class Double A, and Class A.
Gonzales explained that his priority in NMIS is to strengthen meat inspection in all local government units in the country. "I'll see to it that all slaughterhouses in the Philippines are accredited by NMIS, even just a single ‘A'," he said. "NMIS' mandate is 'Safety meat -- safe to eat from farm to table' and that we cannot compromise."
Located in Barangay San Roque, about three kilometers from Legazpi City's downtown area, the slaughterhouse was inaugurated Wednesday after completion of the project.
Legazpi City Mayor Noel Rosal said in his message during the event that the "state-of-the-art" abattoir realizes the city's dream.
He noted that the facility can handle 200 to 300 heads of animals per day and has new equipment, sufficient water supply, and proper waste disposal management.
The abattoir is also serviced by a refrigerated van, which ensures that the transport of meat to the market is free from dirt contamination and the freshness is maintained, Rosal said. (PNA)
