The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) yesterday denied that its drive against “colorum†(illegal) vehicles and other traffic violators is losing steam.
“There were reports that after the first few days, our enforcers stopped apprehending errant drivers, resulting in worsening traffic conditions,†said MMDA Chair Francis Tolentino.
He cited statistics showing that the agency was able to apprehend over a hundred vehicles from Aug. 3 to 4, adding that they continued to catch an average of two violators a day from Aug. 6 to 18.
“The succeeding apprehensions were not as many as at the outset, but this is only because our first week was very successful. We sent a strong signal to operators of colorum vehicles, thus the majority of rogue operators no longer traverse our public thoroughfares,†Tolentino said.
He pointed out that the reported traffic buildup during the morning of Aug. 19 was not due to the heavy volume of vehicles but because of the dismantling of a waiting shed by the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center (TEC) along EDSA-Santolan in Quezon City, asphalting work at EDSA-Taft Avenue and diggings by Manila Water at Evangelista-EDSA in Makati City.
