MAPANDAN, Pangasinan -- This town has been the latest locality declared free of illegal drugs by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) .
The agency said the town of San Nicolas is expected to follow very soon.
PDEA has earlier declared as drug-free the towns of Dasol, Agno, Laoac, and the city of Alaminos -- the first city in the entire country cleared of illegal drugs.
The town of Sto. Tomas, meanwhile, was declared by the PDEA earlier as drug unaffected.
PDEA Assistant Regional Director, Lawyer Marvin Tavares, signed the declaration for Mapandan together with PDEA Assistant Regional Director Marvin Tavares, Department of Interior and Local Government Director James Fadrilan, Police Provincial Director Sr. Superintendent Ronald Lee, Mapandan Mayor Gerald Tambaoan and the town's chief of police.
Prior to the declaration, all the 15 barangays of Mapandan were cleared of illegal drugs.
At least 300 self-confessed drug personalities in Mapandan surrendered to the police, all of them completing rehabilitation interventions. They, too, passed drug tests administered by the Department of Health.
The Pangasinan police said it expects to clear the entire province of illegal drugs by December 31. (PNA)
