DAGUPAN CITY -- The City Council here passed a resolution on Wednesday recommending to Mayor Belen Fernandez that drug surrenderers who will soon graduate from drug rehabilitation program be given the highest preference for job placement in the city government's various infrastructure projects.
Councilor Dennis Canto, who proposed the resolution, said there are some 1,300 drug surrenderers in Dagupan and most of them are now undergoing drug rehabilitation either as in-patients of the Dagupan Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Center (DTRC), out-patients or on community-based rehabilitation.
He said upon completion of their rehabilitation, these people need jobs in order to support themselves and their families.
Canto said Dagupan City has launched many infrastructure projects for the past three years, like construction and elevation of roads, school buildings, health centers, covered courts, evacuation centers and the like that need manpower.
Erjohn Pangilinan, designated focal person on the Masa Masid (Mamamayan Ayaw sa Anomalya, Mamamayan Ayaw sa Droga) program, said rehabilitation therapy for confessed drug users started in July in Barangay Lucao.
Pangilinan said the program is already being implemented in several barangays and hopefully all over Dagupan by December this year.
He assured that once the drug surrenderers complete their rehabilitation and proven they are no longer using illegal substances, their names will be finally removed from the watchlist of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).
He added that they will also be recommended to undergo training under the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) so that they can be employed locally and overseas or be able to have their own income-generating involvements. (PNA)
