Italy to Hire more OFWs

The Italian government is looking to hire more Filipino workers after increasing its assigned quota of skilled labor from the Philippines, a government official announced Monday.

In a statement, Philippine Ambassador to Italy Philippe Lhuillier said that from the 3,000 allotted in 2006, the quota has risen to 5,000 this year.

The figure is bigger than the quotas given to Sri Lanka (3,500), Bangladesh (3,000) and Pakistan (1,000).

Lhuillier said the new quota, under the Italian Migration Law for Non-seasonal Non-European Union Workers (FLUSSI), also covers caregivers, construction and dependent work in general.

He said Filipinos can now enter other work sectors in Italy aside from domestic work as long as there are employers willing to hire them.

Under FLUSSI, Asian nations wishing to enter into cooperation agreement with the Italian government regarding migration were given a total quota of 47,100.

The law also differs from previous laws on migration flows in that the application of the interested employees is done through the Internet.

Interested employers may use their own personal computers or avail of the services, for free, of the accredited employers associations, and labor unions in order to submit requests to accede to the established quota.

“The name-hire system has a built-in advantage for relatives and friends in the Philippines of Filipino workers in Italy. This is because Filipino workers enjoy a good reputation among Italian employers for being honest, serious and hardworking,” Lhuillier said.

Data from the Italian Foreign Exchange Office show that Filipino workers in Italy remitted US$600 million in 2006, the biggest among European country destinations of OFWs.
