ILOILO CITY -- The province of Iloilo is once again a nominee for the National Best Public Employment and Service Office (PESO) Award.
To recall, PESO-Iloilo bested six other nominees in the country last year for the Best PESO award under the first class province category. PESO-Iloilo has been a consistent national nominee since 2012.
PESO-Iloilo is the best in Western Visayas based on the criteria set by the Bureau of Local Employment (BLE) thus, the office automatically became the entry of the region to the national search.
In an interview, PESO-Iloilo department head Francisco Heler Jr. stressed that their accomplishment as the best PESO in the region and national nominee is the result of the support of Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. and the members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) and its partnership with various stakeholders.
He vowed to further strengthen their programs and services to uphold "our mission of excellent employment facilitation and protection."
The provincial government's PESO was institutionalized in 2015 through the enactment of provincial ordinance No. 2015-122, which goal is to help produce a globally competitive workforce by promoting equity in employment opportunities while maintaining quality in the delivery of its employment facilitation services in partnership with the national government agencies and non-government organizations.
Some core services and functions of PESO include registration, referral, placement services, labor market information, career coaching, and employment registration. Also, it includes other special programs of the department including special recruitment activities (SRA), job fairs, electronic manpower skills registry system (E-MSRS), among others.
Last year, PESO here was able to partner with 488 local and overseas companies.
A total of 5, 419 applicants were deployed to local companies and 4,254 for overseas firms, 360 of those applicants were hired on the spot while 850 were hired through 88 SRAs conducted the whole year.
Just last month, a memorandum of agreement was signed between the provincial government and DOLE-6 for the implementation of PESO-Iloilo of the JobStart Philippines program. PESO-Iloilo is piloting the program in Western Visayas.
JobStart Philippines is a youth employment facilitation program of DOLE in partnership with the Asian Development Bank and Government of Canada which aims to enhance the employability of at-risk youth to improve their integration into productive employment.
The awarding for the national best PESO is expected to be conducted in October. (PNA)
