GM Eugene Torre plays with young Ilonggo woodpushers, including Rafael Lazarus Zulueta-Salazar at SM City Iloilo.

Torre was in Iloilo City August 4-6, 2017 for an exhibition game with Ilonggo woodpushers and for the seminar of chess trainers in Iloilo city and province.

Councilor Liezl Zulueta-Salazar with Iloilo City Sports Development Division head Jojo Castro presented to Torre the resolution unanimously approved by the City Council, after the latter’s exhibition game with young Ilonggo woodpushers at SM City Iloilo in Mandurriao district.

The resolution recognizes the “unparalleled achievements in the field of sports of Grandmaster Eugene Torre, an Ilonggo chess legend and Asia’s first Grandmaster.”

Torre was born in Iloilo City on Novermber 4, 1951, and was the first chess grandmaster in Asia at the age of 22.

The resolution says that Torre is considered the strongest chess player the Philippines has ever produced since 1970, who ranked as high as No. 17 in the world in the 1980s.

Further, the resolution noted how Torre assumed the top board (Board 1) for Team Philippines in the 1972 Skopje Olympiad, a position he held until the 2004 Olympiad held at Mallorca, Spain, or a total of 17 Olympiads, which is a world record.

Last February 13, 2017, Torre received a Lifetime Achievement Award in the 2017 PSA Annual Awards, an awarding ceremony that recognizes sports athletes, personalities, organizations and NSAs organized by the Philippine Sportswriters Association, the country’s oldest media organization founded in 1949.

“Being the first Asian player to earn the title of International Grandmaster, Torre has brought honor and prestige not only to Filipino nation but especially to the City of Iloilo,” it said.

The National Chess Federation of the Philippines was also furnished a copy of the resolution. (Maricyn A. De los Santos/PNA)
