DAGUPAN CITY – At least 114 illegal structures have been demolished by the city government  since August 31 this year as part of the continuing river clean-up ordered by Mayor Belen T. Fernandez.

Fernandez gave City Agriculturist Emma J. Molina two weeks to demolish all the illegal fish pens and fish cages still standing in the rivers of Dagupan.

Of  the total, 72 were over-sized floating cages and 42 were fish pens measuring more than 50 square meters.

All these were operated and maintained by 103 operators who are at the same time serving as  caretakers of these structures.

To date, there are just more than 30 fish pens that were left, that was why upon request of Molina, Mayor Fernandez extended the demolition deadline for another one week.

It was learned that the remaining structures are situated on titled properties claimed by different owners but based on an earlier study by the City Legal Office, these are also subject of demolition since they are located on portions of rivers.

Overall, the city has already demolished a total of 942 illegal structures since Fernandez ordered the massive clearing of rivers of illegal structures upon assuming office as mayor in July 2013. (PNA)
