MANGATAREM -- Four packs of "hot" meat consisting of chicken and pork were seized from four vendors inside the town plaza here by a joint team from the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), municipal officials and the local police strictly implementing quarantine regulations on account of the avian flu outbreak in San Luis, Pampanga.
The four vendors were caught in the act of selling their products without corresponding permits at past 2:00 p.m. on Thursday and were slapped with a case of illegal shipment of chicken and pork, the Mangatarem police reported.
Rommel Rosario, 24; Joselito Gabotin, 40; Mark Benconsejo, 31; and Edmar Buenconsejo, all of Barangay Malibong, Urbiztondo, were found selling meat inside the public plaza of Mangatarem instead of at the town's public market.
They were caught by joint elements of BAI of the Department of Agriculture led by Benito Jazmin, Municipal Agriculture Officer, Municipal Meat Inspector's Office led by Marlou Montoya, Mangatarem Meat Vendors Association president Estrella Vergara and local policemen.
Mangatarem is the border town of Pangasinan with Tarlac where a quarantine station as well as checkpoint are located to prevent the entry of chicken, fowls, birds and their bi-products believed infected by avian flu virus.
The arrested suspects were selling meat products on board a motorcycle fitted with a livestock carrier called "garong" without business permit from the Municipal Treasurer's Office here, shipping permit as required by BAI and Health Certificate from the Municipal Health Office.
The four were also accused of allegedly mishandling the meat products that they are selling in violation of the regulations set by the National Meat and Inspection Service (NMIS).
The suspects and the confiscated items were turned over to the office of the Meat Inspector of the town for proper for investigation and disposition. (PNA)
