Some 200 Red Pacu (Colossoma bidens), a herbivorous fish propagated for commercial purposes by the National Integrated Fisheries Technology Development Center (NIFTDC) in Dagupan, were dispersed at Binalbalolong Creek to temper the rapid growth of water hyacinth that clogged the passageway.
Mayor Armando Domantay Sr., together with Dr. Westly Rosario, chief of NIFTDC, led the dispersal of the six-month old Red Pacu. The fish fed on water hyacinth that abounds on the creek.
Malasiqui was the first town in Pangasinan to adopt biological initiative to prevent flood.
Dr. Rosario said Mayor Domantay requested for the fish after learning that the Red Pacu feeds on plants, such as water hyacinth.
Rosario related that the mayor has plan of putting up a floating restaurant along Binalbalolong Creek and turn the creek into a tourist spot.
"The Binalbalolong Creek has a historical value and they want to preserve it," Rosario said. It was an important passageway during the Spanish time.
"If this would work, we hope to disperse more Red Pacu in other creeks here", Domantay added.
Meanwhile,Malasiqui was associated to the old tale of three Spanish soldiers who passed by the creek during the early days of colonization. - pna.gov.ph
