POLICE arrested yesterday the alleged killer and rapist of the Mactan Export Zone (Mez) worker whose body was dumped and left to decompose in a grassy lot at the Mandaue City Reclamation area.
Police arrested Julius Coton, 26, of Zamboanga City, in his rented shack in Sitio Aroma, Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City. His place is just a kilometer away from where Emily Nuñeza was killed.
Coton said he killed Nuñeza, 24, after she told him she would report him to the police and have him jailed if he didn’t give back her cellular phone. He met Nuñeza through a radio dating show.
Coton swapped phones with Nuñeza on their first meeting. He then excused himself to buy food. He did not return.
The two arranged a second meeting on Jan. 23 at the Star Mart inside the Caltex gasoline station in Mandaue City. Coton had reportedly promised to return her phone.
Coton admitted to reporters he choked Nuñeza until she lost consciousness. Then he tied her arms and neck.
Medico-legal officer Dr. Nestor Sator said the victim was raped before she was strangled. Police previously said Nuñeza
was likely raped and tortured by two or more men before she was strangled.
Insp. Gregorio Aniñon, homicide section chief, led yesterday’s arrest. Police also recovered the victim’s Nokia 2600, her office mate’s Nokia cellular phone, phone used by Coton’ and a 3315 cellular phone reportedly stolen from an Ayala Center employee.
Aniñon said he got a valuable tip from a man who was offered the four phones by the suspect. The man declined to buy the
units. Suspicious, he contacted Aniñon through the numbers printed in an issue of Sun.Star Cebu.
The informant also named the people who bought the cellular phones. The buyers are also residents of Sitio Aroma.
Aniñon said the buyers are willing to execute affidavits against Coton. Nuñeza’ cellular phone was sold for P600. That of her officemate sold for only P300. The prices of the other items were not yet known.
Aniñon also seized the suspect’s clothes and black Nike shoes, some of which he wore during his first date with Nuñeza. The two met through a radio dating show.
Mandaue City Police Office officer-in-charge Senior Supt. Orlando Ualat said the arrest is a product of hard work of his men.
In a radio dyRF interview, the host of the radio show where the victim and the suspect met, Ramil Albaño who is also known as Inday Misyel, commended the police for the arrest of the suspect.
Albaño, who accompanied police in following up the case for four days, said his radio dating program has been stopped and may soon be reformatted to do away with the announcement of cellular phone numbers on air.
He said he respects the decision of management.
Coton introduced himself to Nuñeza as Michael.
After the killing, police received several false information.
Later, one of Nuñeza’s workmates who lives in sitio Aroma heard of someone who was selling cellular phones. He informed Aniñon about it.
Aniñon and PO1 Cristituto Raboy planned to arrest Coton Sunday night but they were not sure if Coton was home.
Yesterday, the informant told them Coton was home eating.
Aniñon and Raboy caught up with Coton while he was preparing his biodata for his application as a construction worker.
The suspect confessed to the crime upon his arrest. (OCP)
