GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- Police authorities here are pushing for a ban on the use of helmets by motorcycle riders in the city’s downtown area in a bid to counter criminal activities involving motorcycle-riding suspects.
Sr. Supt. Romeo Ruel Berango, acting city police director, said Wednesday the move could help prevent the occurrence of street crimes and facilitate the easy identification of suspects in some cases.
He said they are set to submit a proposal to the Sangguniang Panlungsod or City Council here for the passage of an ordinance regarding the measure.
“This is really necessary as most crime suspects have been hiding their identities by using motorcycle helmets,” he said.
Berango specifically cited several cases of daring murders these past months that involved suspects riding-in-tandem in motorcycles.
A number of these killings were believed perpetrated by hired gunmen based in areas outside the city.
The police official said they decided to propose such matter to the City Council for thorough studies and public consultations.
“Several key cities have already banned the wearing of motorcycle helmets as a security and crime prevention measure,” he said.
The city government, through the traffic management office, has been strictly implementing the wearing of helmets by motorcycle riders as a safety measure.
The city’s traffic enforcers, who are deputized by the Land Transportation Office, have been apprehending motorcycle riders not wearing helmets and those using motorcycle that don’t have standard accessories like side mirrors.
To complement the proposed ban on the wearing of helmets, Berango said they will also ask for the imposition of a minimum speed limit for motorcycles to prevent accidents.
He said another alternative would be the designation of motorcycle lanes along the city’s major thoroughfares.(AVE/PNA)
