ILOILO CITY, Aug 10 -- The Department of Education (DepEd) here lauded the initiative of the Calinog National Comprehensive High School (CNCHS)  supporting the currency program advocacy of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) particularly on the coin recirculation program.

Victor De Gracia Jr, officer-in-charge for the office of the assistant regional director of DepEd 6, said that the step the school has taken could be replicated, especially in schools that offer Accounting, Business and Management (ABM) track in their Senior High School.

The CNCHS project started as an income generating project (IGP) in 2013 following the onslaught of super typhoon "Yolanda". They were able to raise around PHP17,000 worth of coins, according to Janette Alcarde, Master Teacher 1 and adviser of the Math Bank.

With the help of one teacher, they were able to connect with the Progressive Bank in Iloilo, which adopted their school. The donation is being converted into an individual account once the money reaches PHP100.

The accounts have individual ledgers that are managed by ABM senior high school students. “We have a Math Bank receiving their coins and handled by our senior high school students,” Alcarde said.

Last year, they have around PHP11,000 in deposits at the Progressive Bank from the accounts of around 20 percent of the 1,850 student population.

Ma. Emily I. Calumpang, Principal I of the CNCHS said that they will sustain the program to include  Grades 7 to 12.

De Gracia said that saving as small as 25 centavo coin is very affordable for students. “With that they would know how to save and invest for successful business,” he said.

For three straight years the CNCHS has bagged the BSP award for their program. During Monday’s ceremony, they received both the 14-inch ‘Soaring to Greater Heights’ brass trophy for the Gold Hall of Fame Award and the ‘Dynamic Balance Philippine Eagle’ trophy designed by Filipino visual artist Ferdinand Cacnio.
