PALO, Leyte, Aug. 10 -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will exhibit the 15 best food products in  Eastern Visayas in the upcoming Regional Science and Technology Week celebration here on September19 to 21.

DOST Eastern Visayas regional information officer Ramil Uy said on Thursday that they have been preparing small and medium entrepreneurs for the big event meant to promote the region’s excellent products.

Uy said that among the preparations are enhancement of food processing, improve its packaging, extension of shelf life, and improved sanitation.

Through technology, processors utilized high quality packaging materials, extended shelf life from six months to one year, and provision of food grade equipment to avoid contamination.

Among the region’s native delicacies are binagol (sweet root crop inside molded in coconut shell), moron (a mix of sticky rice and cocoa wrapped with banana leaves), pastillas (candy made from carabao’s milk), suman (a combination of white and brown glutinous rice), smoked fish, Roscas cookies, and chocolate tablets.

Aside from showcasing the region’s best food products, there is also a Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit (RICE) to be joined by inventors, innovators, researchers and students.

RICE is a nationwide activity conducted in different regions to recognize the indispensability of the Filipino inventors in the  society and in the landscape of national economic development.

There are also scheduled forums meant to raise public awareness on the available technology to make every life of Filipino better.

“We really have to discuss what DOST can do to different sectors like education, engineering, manufacturing, tourism, environment, and even food processing,” he added.

The exhibit, which will be held at Robinsons Place Tacloban, is part of the 2017 Regional Science and Technology Week celebration on Sept. 19-21, 2017 that carries the theme “Science for the people.” (With reports by Alecxis L. Panganiban, OJT/PNA)
