BACOLOD CITY -- Villages in Negros Occidental hit by floods in the last week of September reported PHP11.4 million in total crop damage and production losses.
As of Wednesday, a terminal report of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA), covering the period September 22 to 30, showed the hardest-hit was the rice sector that posted a damage of PHP11 million, affecting 727 farmers in 47 barangays of six local government units in southern Negros.
In San Enrique town, affected were 278 farmers planting on 369.19 hectares, registering the highest production losses of almost PHP5.1 million.
Neighboring Valladolid reported a damage of PHP1.6 million to crops of 153 farmers with 254.85 hectares of rice farms.
Sipalay City reported a damage of almost PHP1.4 million, covering 78 farmers with 69 hectares of ricefields.
Others were Murcia with PHP1.3 million damage; Bago City, almost PHP1.1 million; and Ilog, PHP648,000.
The OPA report also showed PHP373,650 in losses in the vegetable sector, affecting 36 farmers in a 5.8-hectare plantation in Valladolid town.
Earlier, the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) reported PHP196,403 damage to the livestock and poultry sector due to heavy rains in the municipalities of Salvador Benedicto, San Enrique, Binalbagan, and Hinoba-an. (PNA)
