Five overseas Filipino workers died after a fire broke out inside their staff house in Brunei Friday morning, an official of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported.

In a text message, DFA spokesman Claro Cristobal said Virginia Benavidez, Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, reported that seven people, including five OFWs, died in the fire at a staff house in Kuala Belait District located in Kuala Belait, the second largest town in the country second to Bandar Seri Bagawan.

DFA officials have yet to release the names of the victims in the fire.

The house, made of wood, accommodated 24 people, 22 of whom were OFWs, the report said.

One of the 17 OFWs who survived the blaze, was taken to a hospital after she jumped out of the second floor of the burning house. The female OFW sustained spine injuries.

The report added that the OFWs have been receiving assistance from the Philippine embassy, their employers and the Filipino community in Brunei.

Arson investigators are still determining the cause of the fire.

It's hard to wait for something you know might not happen, but it's harder to give up when you know it's everything you wanted.
