DUMAGUETE CITY, Aug. 10 – A fire razed three houses and damaged another including the remains of the dead man during a wake early Thursday here.
Neighbors and friends attending the vigil ran for to safety, leaving behind the coffin of their departed one when they noticed that fire was eating up a portion of the house in Purok Masanagon, Barangay Mangnao in this capital of Negros Oriental.
The fire was tapped at 2:25 a.m. Thursday by a motorist who reported the incident to the fire station.
When firefighters arrived, the fire had already engulfed the three houses built of mixed materials and partially damaged the fourth one.
Investigation showed the fire started at the residence of one Rodrigo Pacija, spread to the next house owned by Estelita Pacija where a vigil was going on for her husband, Edward, who died recently. It also razed the next house owned by Bonifacio Organista and also partially damaged the house of Rosalina Corsame.
The four houses were situated in one compound.
Fire Officer 1 Mark Susaña said the cause of the fire is still being investigated with no estimate of damage yet.
