Fire broke out in a squatter’s area in Makati City
« on: January 11, 2008, 06:20:24 PM »

A fire broke out in a squatter’s area in Makati City, gutting several houses near the southbound lane of EDSA Guadalupe Friday morning.

Radio dzMM said the fire hit the depressed area in Barangay Guadualupe Viejo around 8 a.m. The fire caused heavy traffic on the EDSA southbound lane as firefighters and affected families spilled over the major thoroughfare. Only one lane was passable to southbound vehicles.

The fire has been declared under control as of 10:30 a.m.

San Carlos Seminary opened its gates to accommodate the families who lost their houses in the blaze.

Barangay officials said there are around 5,000 families living in the three-hectare property in Lapiral compound, located at the back of the Loyola Memorial Funeral Home.

A body of an elderly man was seen being carried by residents in the place. The man died of an illness not related to the fire, relatives said.

Arson investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
