Filipino Nurse Dies in UK Due to Wrong Use of Anaesthetic
« on: January 09, 2008, 01:41:50 AM »

A Filipino nurse in Great Britain died hours after giving birth in May 2004 when an anaesthetic was fed into her arm instead of her back, online reports revealed Tuesday.

An inquest in Great Britain this month showed that theater nurse Mayra Cabrera, 30, suffered a heart attack last May 11, 2004 when an epidural anaesthetic was mistakenly put into her arm.

Cabrera was giving birth to her baby, Zachary, at the Great Western hospital in Swindon Wiltshire when hospital staff injected her with Bupivacaine. The baby survived but Cabrera died as a result of the wrong use of the powerful anaesthetic.

The inquest disclosed that the despite the efforts of doctors, they were unable to revive her.

Cabrera's husband, Arnel, was forced to return to the Philippines because his work visa depended on his wife having work. The couple worked at the hospital where she died.

Arnel said doctors told him that his wife died of an embolism during childbirth, which is a very rare occurrence. He said he was only informed of the real reason for his wife's death one year later.

Wiltshire coroner David Masters told the jury in Trowbridge that there had been two other deaths at hospitals in the UK in the last decade caused by the epidural drug Bupivacaine being administered intravenously. Swindon and Marlborough NHS Trust has admitted responsibility for the death of the Filipino nurse.

What an unimaginable pain for the husband. The child was saved but he lost his wife.

Belle, pero the hospital staff has mistakenly given the medication via IV instead of Epidural...

so dili bah sya matawag ug negligence?

contraindicated naman jud ning Bupivacaine intravenously diba? kay mo result man sya ug systemic drug absorption that would lead to CNS & Cardiovascular effects?

naka pasaka bah ang husband ug kaso? nga after a year paman siya sultihi sa main reason sa ikinamatay sa iyang wife?

if ang husband gi pauli sa Pilipinas kay nag base iyang pagpuyo didto sa working visa sa iyang asawa, then one year after pa sya gi sultihan sa rason nga namatay iyang asawa... siguro wala na juy kwartang sakto ni si Mr. Cabrera? so wala na syay ika gasto para mopasaka ug kaso sah?

as in unfair jud kaayo...

Just as what the experienced nurses in here have already reiterated, this case is an example of the sad and unfortunate. Negligence on the part of the Obstetrics staff in accidentally placing the strong anesthetic in the wrong place. It is a shame that she died, but the important thing is that the child was saved, hoping of course there is no long-term neurological damage to the child vis-a-vis the use of the strong anesthetic. The hospital should be held responsible. I think the husband and the family of the victim have a case. They should have demanded reparations for the negligence; because of that a life was lost.

I dont know. Perhaps the Obstetrics floor was filled with patients; perhaps there wasn't enough nurses; perhaps the physician in charge was inexperienced etc. There are many factors that culminated to the wrong insertion.

All they can do now is assist in the healing process. Monetary grant would help in the process.

This is very unfortunate.

There is also one incident that a patient wake up in the middle of the operation. The patient could not move, but could feel the sharp pain while the doctor sliced her stomach and she can feel while doctors emptied her intrails.

I think there is a movie made recently based on this incident. I think similar story was also featured in the TV series Grey's Anatomy.

I think Lorenzo could explain this more.

Sir Mack.. sa ing-ani nga case...
ang anesthesia niya wala na follow up...
I even handle a case like this when I scrub in before...
what I had observed was, I saw the pt.'s hand moving...
so I let my circulating nurse to inform to anesthesiologist (whos making laag at that time, nag standby sa ilahang quarter while nag sige pa ug opera)..
I let my circu nurse to inform the anesthesiologist nga mi lihok na ang kamot sa pt... unya wala pami nahuman sa operation... so gi duganagn ang dose sa anesthesia sa pt...

Bitaw, mao diay to AWAKE kadtong gi ingon ni Wilmerit. Ang hadlok raba ani kung nakabuka imong mata kay makakita ka pag hiwa sa imong tiyan. Ang bantayan ani kay ang mata kung mag luha, means gi sakitan.

represents?
nah wala may parihas nako... aside ni Dr. Bailey (daku man sya... hahahaha)
but ang kina ganahan nako nga character sa Grey's is Dr. Yang (Christina) - Ms. Sandra Oh
I like her for being, smart, simple, fighter, competitive,  and frank... (not mentioning na iyang pagka burara sa iyang gamit... I mean bisan asa ibutang? gubot ang balay --- dili ko ana pod woi..)

by the way Sir Macks... naa diay bag-o nga episode sa Grey's sa season 4, naay ilang gi operahan sa heart nga as in awake sya... kay wala may mahimo ang mga doktors kay allergic ang pt sa mga anesthesia.. so... gi operahan nga "wide awake" ang patient... and it was Issie (Dr. Steven) ang mi scrub - in...

Tig Subay-bay ba ka Grey's Sir Mack?

This is very unfortunate.

There is also one incident that a patient wake up in the middle of the operation. The patient could not move, but could feel the sharp pain while the doctor sliced her stomach and she can feel while doctors emptied her intrails.

I think there is a movie made recently based on this incident. I think similar story was also featured in the TV series Grey's Anatomy.

I think Lorenzo could explain this more.

Yes, the movie you're referring to is Awake starring Jessica Alba. The movie draws conclusion with the reports by physicians and surgeons of patients experiencing Anesthesia Awareness; about 1% of Americans that undergo surgery and given some kind of anesthesia experience the physical side effects of the analgesic, stiffness, imobility, yet their nervous system, particularly in the central and peripheral nervous system are not fully inhibited, therefore, when the surgery begins, patients literally feel every cut and movement. Some patients -- including people getting heart surgery, emergency surgery, or C-sections -- may be more likely to experience anesthesia awareness. That's because doctors may need to use a lighter dose of anesthetic to keep the patient (or baby, in the case of C-section) stable.

Patients may remember procedures that involve local anesthesia, but that's not anesthesia awareness.

The use of brain function monitors during surgery can cut the chance of a patient experiencing anesthesia awareness, according to Bloom, Guidry, and colleagues. But the doctors warn that those devices don't rule out all possibility of anesthesia awareness. They describe a fine line between too little anesthesia, which may lead to anesthesia awareness, and too much anesthesia, which may cause side effects including nausea and vomiting after surgery.
About 21,000 Americans experience Anesthesia Awareness every year.

Mr. Ferniz,

If you are looking to read more into the medical phenomenon of AA (Anesthesia Awareness), you can go onto The New England Journal of Medicine, the leading medical forum here in the United States and in the West. There are articles on this subject matter. Here's the Link, Mr. Ferniz. Enjoy.
