Bong Go files resolution commending and congratulating Filipinas team for their historic win in ASEAN Football Federation Women’s Championship
Recognizing the glory and honor they brought to the country, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go filed Senate Resolution No. 62 on Monday, July 25, commending and congratulating all of the members of the Filipinas Football Team for winning the country’s first-ever 2022 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Championship last July 17 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Over 8,000 spectators witnessed the Filipinas’ historic win over the regional powerhouse Thailand War Elephants, 3-0. The Filipino team has already made history earlier this year by also clinching the Philippines’ first World Cup berth.
Go’s resolution exhibits his continuing efforts as Chair of the Senate Committee on Sports to promote long-term sports development in the country, particularly to encourage more sports programs, league competitions, and amateur sports, including training for international sports competitions, to instill self-discipline, teamwork, and excellence.
“I have consistently pushed for an intensive sports development in the country as I believe sports is an effective way to keep Filipino youth away from vices,” expressed Go.
“Napatunayan po na napakalaki ng kontribusyon ng sports sa ating bansa, hindi lamang natutulungan ang ating mga kababayan sa kanilang kalusugan kundi nabibigyan din sila ng napakaraming oportunidad sa larangan ng palakasan,” he continued.
Meanwhile, Go likewise commended the team’s manager Jeff Cheng and head coach Alen Stajcic for inspiring the team to always do their best that led them to win their first championship in this year’s AFF.
The resolution likewise cited that the triumph of the Filipinas team is a result of their hard work, dedication and perseverance. Furthermore, Go acknowledged how the Filipino athletes have showcased their grit, determination and competitiveness in international sporting events.
“The symbolic win has not only brought our nation pride and honor, but has become an inspiration to youth and women empowerment,” remarked Go.
The senator also vowed to remain steadfast in promoting and protecting the welfare and interests of the Filipino athletes.
In this respect, Go recently pushed for the passage of the Philippine National Games (PNG) Act of 2022 that shall provide a structure for a more comprehensive national sports program, linking grassroots sports promotion to national sports development.
Not to be confused with Palarong Pambansa, the PNG is a national multi-sport tournament that aims to widen the base talent identification and efficiently constitute the national pool to be trained for international sports competition.
Likewise, the proposed bill aims to ensure a more inclusive system of promoting promising Filipino athletes who possess potential in various fields of sports to be given an equal opportunity of becoming future contenders in international sporting competitions and cement the country’s status as a “Sports Powerhouse in Asia”.
“I am one with President (Ferdinand) Marcos Jr. in highlighting the importance of sports in nation-building. I reiterate my firm commitment to always look after the welfare of our athletes and to push for long-term and grassroots sports development,” Go previously said.
“These will both help our country become again as one of the sports powerhouses in Asia and also encourage our young people to stay away from illegal drugs and criminality by getting into sports,” he added.
