IN A BID to make sure that public and private drivers are fit to drive a vehicle, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) will require all drivers' license applicants to undergo a neuro-psychological test.
But LTO Assistant Secretary Alberto Suansing stressed that the neuro test will be apart from the existing drug and health exams requirements imposed on applicants.

"There is a need to require drivers - whether they are driving public utility vehicles or private cars - to undergo neuro test in order to make sure that they are fit to drive a vehicle," Suansing said.
"I consider motor vehicles as a lethal weapon no different from a firearm, and if not handled properly it could hurt and even kill somebody that is why drivers' license holders should also need to undergo neuro test," he added.
The official said the proposed additional requirement is now on the consultation and planning stage with various transport sector stakeholders, and the LTO is determining if the move would require Congress to pass a law or would just be implemented through administrative order.
"The rising number of vehicular accidents and poor road behavior of drivers are the main bases why there is a need to require drivers to undergo neuro test before they are issued new license," Suansing said.
The LTO is requiring all applicants to take medical test to find out if they are physically fit to drive and drug test to make sure that they are not illegal drug user.
Suansing said although the inclusion of neuro test will increase the driver's fee, it is a small price to pay to ensure public safety. (AH/Sunnex)
