Farmers told to properly vaccinate fowls
« on: May 01, 2020, 11:16:40 PM »
CEBU CITY -- Livestock technicians and municipal agriculturists from all over Cebu gathered here on Friday for a general assembly to identify problems and to come up with countermeasures against bird flu virus.

The provincial government, through its veterinary office, called for the assembly held at the Capitol social hall to also brief and orient the participants on the Avian Influenza Protection Program Manual of Procedures (AIPP).

Dr. Mary Vincoy, Cebu Provincial Veterinary, reminded owners of their responsibility to report poultry deaths in their farms to the municipal, city or provincial agriculture offices.  "Reports sent to these offices will always be verified," said Vincoy.

The reminder was issued after the Provincial Agriculture Office received reports of mortalities from poultary farms in both northern and southern parts of Cebu. However, Vincoy withheld the names of the areas until an official report has been filed.

"There is no reason to panic. Livestock could perish anytime because of any other factors, like heat strokes, unsanitary environment in the farms or in their neighbourhood, and lack of proper vaccination," said Vincoy.

She assured that the outbreak investigation teams were maintaining strict surveillance on the safety of livestock and poultry products in Cebu.

Stressing that prevention is better than cure, Vincoy said that poultry owners should invest in proper vaccination while food-processing corporations should also have their own company veterinarians to check on their livestock.

"The bacterial infections that have been reported do not jump from one species to another. However, it is still unhealthy to eat the infected chickens," said Vincoy. (With reports from USJR intern Ador Menchavez/PNA)
