Some P3.5 million worth of cellular phones reportedly equipped with “voice scrambler†feature were seized by joint operatives of the Manila Police District (MPD) and National Telecommunications Commission (NTC)in a series of raids in Divisoria, Manila on Wednesday.
Superintendent Nelson Yabut, commander of the MPD Meisic Station 11, said the morning raids were enforced by joint operatives from MPD and NTC represented by Delaila Deles.
The NBI official said the raids resulted in the seizure of 1,000 pieces of fake Nokia mobile phones suspected to have been smuggled from China worth P3.5 million.
The raids were carried out after authorities uncovered earlier a new feature of counterfeit mobile phones. These mobile phones now being circulated in the “black market†are equipped with a "voice scrambler" that reportedly has the capability to alter the voice of the user beyond auditory recognition.
The NBI official pointed out that the fake Nokia model may just turn up to be a favorite among high-profile criminal syndicates in their illegal operations.
Yabut said the voice scrambler feature was reportedly available on counterfeit E series Nokia cellphones.
The official said the caller can choose at least six voices including the voice of a woman, an old woman, a man, and old man and two others.
“It poses danger and attraction to criminals,†Yabut warned. saying that it could be used by other criminal elements or pranksters "specially this coming election.†(PNA)
