Esperon says no assassination plot vs JDV
« on: February 05, 2008, 05:56:31 PM »
The country’s military chief on Tuesday denied an allegation made in a privilege speech by Pangasinan 4th district Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr. before he was ousted as House Speaker of an assassination plot by retired generals against him and his son.

De Venecia had said that according to former Army chief retired Lt. Gen. Jaime de los Santos there were two or three retired generals plotting to kill de Venecia and his son that would allegedly use a member of Abu Sayyaf. Jose III, de Venecia’s son is a whistleblower in the scrapped national broadband deal alleged to be bribery-laden and overpriced which is the subject of a Senate investigation.

Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr., Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff, said that no military man is in the business of assassinating people as he added that it is also unthinkable to use the Abu Sayyaf.

Esperon called on the former speaker, whom he thanked for the being good to the military during his five terms as House Speaker, to be more specific in his allegations.

Meanwhile Esperon said that the AFP is not in any way affected by the change of leadership in the House of Representatives.

Esperon told reporters during a visit to the headquarters of the Philippine Army that what happened in the Lower House was just part of the democratic process and that the military has no position or part on the matter.

Esperon brought along his joint staff in his visit to the Army headquarters and was were briefed by senior Army generals led by commanding general Lt. Gen. Alexander Yano on the Army’s internal security operations against the communist New People’s Army (NPA).

Yano has been designated by President Arroyo as AFP chief of staff after Esperon’s term extension.

Esperon revealed that what happened yesterday in the lower chamber of Congress was not talked about in their meeting and was not part of their agenda.

Esperon said that the military’s focus is to fulfill it's mission of reducing the number of NPA fronts and getting rid of the Abu Sayyaf Group. To prove his point that the military leadership is not worried about the events in the Lower House, Esperon said that the military’s alert status remains normal, though some units are on alert.

Yano for his part observed that, at present, he sees no internal threat from disgruntled soldiers.

He also expressed confidence that any attempt to recruit soldiers to destabilize the government will fail. Jay Ruiz, ABS-CBN News
