DAVAO CITY – Using the hashtag #desperado, President Rodrigo Duterte’s son-in-law lashed back at Senator Antonio Trillanes III over smuggling accusation at the Bureau of Customs (BoC).
Lawyer Manases “Mans” Carpio, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio’s husband, described Trillanes as a "desperate rumor-monger," who happens to be a senator.
Carpio admitted to have visited BoC because he represents many clients, who have transactions with the agency.
“I represent many clients who have transactions with the Bureau of Customs. It is my job as a lawyer to appear before government agencies for and on behalf of my principals,” Carpio said in a statement posted on his Facebook account.
“Senator Trillanes is imputing malice in saying that my appearance before the BOC is because of smuggling. He is just a desperate rumor-monger who happens to be a senator.#desperado,” Carpio added.
Carpio, who also happens to be the nephew of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, was tagged by Trillanes as allegedly involved in corruption in the BOC.
Trillanes claimed he has at least three informants who can validate this allegation.
The senator has been targeting the Dutertes, including Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte and City Councilor Nilo “Small” Abellera to discredit the President in his anti-corruption campaign.
Abellera Jr. did not appear on Tuesday’s continuation of the Senate hearing on the P6.4 billion shabu shipment from China which slipped through the BoC and later seized in Valenzuela City.
Abellera Jr's name was mentioned by Customs broker, "fixer" and witness Mark Taguba as a member of the so-called “Davao Group” that allegedly facilitated the release of the illegal shipment.
Abellera was invited to the Senate hearing but did not show up due to health reasons. (Lilian C. Mellejor/PNA)
