CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan -- President Rodrigo Roa Duterte thanked Bulakenyos and asked their continued support in the fight against illegal drugs, corruption and criminality.

During the commemoration of the 119th anniversary of the Malolos Congress at the historic Barasoain Church on Friday, Duterte relayed his message through Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Assistant Secretary Ricojudge Janvier Echiverri.

In a message read by Echiverri, Duterte expressed gratitude to the people of Bulacan for voting for him in last year's elections and for their trust and continued support.

“Isang karangalan ang maanyayahan sa pag-gunita ng kauna-unahang kongreso ng Pilipinas. Kagaya noon, marami pa ring hamon ngunit naipakita na ng ating mga ninuno na kaya nating tumayo sa sarili nating mga paa at kakakayanin pa din natin ito basta magkaka-isa at sama-sama tayo bilang isang lahi at isang bansa (It's an honor to be invited to the occasion remembering the first Congress of the Philippines. Just like before, there are still many challenges today but our ancestors had showed that we can stand on our own feet and we can still hurdle the challenges if we stay united as one race and one country),” the President’s message read.

With regard to the fight against hard drugs, Duterte said, “death and killing” is not a state policy.

The President message said he will exert all means to rid the country of the dope menace but he did not want to waste lives, especially the youth, who are mostly the victims of this scourge of society.

Duterte, likewise, spoke on the proposed postponement of the barangay elections.

Echiverri said that based on the President’s list, there are at least 40,000 village officials who are directly involved in the proliferation of illegal drugs.

He urged them to resign immediately, stressing that good village officials should lead community-based war against drugs and not act as protectors or drug lords themselves.

Senator Aquino, who is also a guest speaker, said the sacrifices of Filipino revolutionaries should not be forgotten because they resulted in the freedom that modern-day Filipinos are now enjoying.

He said he is proud that his great grandfather, Sevillano Aquino, was a member of the Malolos Congress.

Meanwhile, Gov. Alvarado said Bulakenyos will always go back to Barasoain Church because of their love for freedom and independence and their reverence for their heroes.

He said this sacred ground, the great propagandist and Bulakenyo hero Gat Marcelo H. Del Pilar planted the love for freedom that is why up to now, people are preserving that legacy.

He said September 15 is the culmination of the month-long celebration that began August 15, the foundation day of the province.

Vice Governor Daniel Fernando, on the other hand, said the significance of Malolos Congres shall forever be enshrined in the heart and soul of freedom-loving Filipinos.

Malolos City Mayor Christian D. Natividad, for his part, said the Malolos Congress has changed the views of the world on the people of the Philippines.

“From being referred to as the lowly 'Indio', the Filipino race has been recognized as citizens of the Republic of the Philippines,” Natividad said.

The Malolos Congress , also known as the "National Assembly" of representatives, was the constituent assembly of the First Philippine Republic. It was convened at the Barasoain Church on September 15, 1698 where the Malolos Constitution was drafted. (PNA)
