CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — More than 400 police personnel who underwent drug testing had tested negative for traces of prohibited substances, according to the Philippine National Police-10 (PNP-10).
Those who underwent random drug testing came from various offices based in the region who were ordered to subject themselves to a surprise drug test, said Police Supt. Lemuel Gonda, PNP-10 spokesperson.
The testing was conducted by the PNP Regional Crime Laboratory-10 (RCLO-10) to personnel of the Command Group, Directorial Staff, Chief of National Administrative Support Units, and National Operation Support Units and Non-uniformed Personnel, on Sept. 18-21.
Included in the examination were officers from the police offices of Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon.
Supt. Gonda said all the 480 personnel who submitted their urine specimen “yielded negative results” as declared by the RCLO-10 led by Senior Supt. Leocy Magabo, head of the crime laboratory, on Sept. 22.
Gonda said the random and unannounced drug exam was “part of the internal cleansing program, particularly aimed at ferreting out drug-using policemen.”
“This is in compliance with the directive of Police Director General Ronald dela Rosa [the PNP chief], to cleanse the rank from Officers down to the lowest rank as part of the PNP internal cleansing strategy of the organization,” Gonda said.
Police Chief Supt. Timoteo Pacleb, the PNP-10 regional director, said the examination aims to "restore and uphold the integrity of the organization and public’s trust with the conduct of mandatory drug tests among all personnel and intensified efforts to eradicate illegal drugs as majority of heinous crime in the country are drug-related."
Pacleb said he wanted police officers who have “unsullied service reputation, unblemished record, and a character beyond suspicion to perform their mandated task to get rid of illegal drugs, criminality and corruption.”
Gonda said the PNP-10 will continue to conduct random drug testing for a drug-free police regional office. (PNA/Jigger J. Jerusalem)
