BACOLOD CITY -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has encouraged Negrenses to engage in business during the “ber” months, particularly December, when consumer spending is high.
DTI-Negros Occidental Provincial Director Lea Gonzales said that during this period, people have the capacity to spend more, owing to the Christmas bonus and other cash incentives they receive.
Tourists, including Filipinos from abroad, also visit Negros Occidental during the Christmas season, providing local entrepreneurs more opportunities to earn.
In demand during the holidays are food, decors and housewares.
“Buyers start to look for various gift items by this time. The demand for these commodities even increases towards the holiday season,” Gonzales said.
She added that aspiring entrepreneurs, such as students, should have the proper approach, which they can learn through inquiry, consultation, and training services provided by the DTI through the Negosyo Centers.
“One should have an entrepreneurial mindset, and it would also help if the business is aligned with their interests so that they will enjoy the experience,” Gonzales said, adding that it is also important to test first the product to see if it will “click” in the market.
Business newbies should also consider the availability of raw materials, she added.
Moreover, Gonzales said that existing enterprises should continue to innovate.
For example, pastry producers should think of innovative designs and presentations, aside from ensuring product quality.
“Innovation provides a product the competitive advantage over other commodities of the same line,” she said. (PNA)
