ILOILO CITY, Aug. 11 -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) here is encouraging local government units in Western Visayas to replicate some of their completed social technology projects (STP) to be able to respond to specific need of their constituents.
DSWD gathered social welfare officers from Antique and Guimaras provinces on Friday for an orientation on the STP and also update them on the various programs and initiatives of the department.
In her presentation, DSWD 6 information officer May R. Castillo said that STP is an “innovative social welfare and development concept, strategy or approach that is developed, enhanced and pilot tested to address emerging needs of the poor, disadvantaged, and vulnerable sectors in the society.” These are pilot tested by the DSWD Social Technology Bureau or field offices of the department.
Among these are the anti-abuse program for elderly known as the Reporting System and Prevention Program for Elder Abuse Cases (RESPPEC), Sharing Computer Access Locally and Abroad (SCALA), Family Drug Abuse Prevention Program (FDAPP) and the Special Drug Education Center.
“These are just some of the projects we would like to be replicated to respond to specific problems,” Castillo said. The department will extend technical assistance should there are LGUs that will take interest in adopting any of the projects.
RESPPEC seeks to ensure that elderly in the community are not neglected while SCALA provides opportunities for recipients to gain employment after completing the six-month training.
The drug education center serves as a resource center where children can go for research, counselling and establish camaraderie, among others.
The next orientation will be for social welfare officers of Capiz and Aklan while the Iloilo group is slated this coming August 21, 2017. (PNA)
