DUMAGUETE CITY – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Negros Oriental assured on Thursday that it is doing its best to speed up the release of payments for students enrolled in the Government Internship Program (GIP).
Maritess Mercado, DOLE provincial head, gave the assurance following reports that many of the students who availed of the GIP have not been paid yet for about two months since the program started.
These include those who have been assigned to the local government unit (LGU) of Dumaguete City, the capital of Negros Oriental.
According to Mercado, the release of payment was stalled due to the expiration of the bond of one of their disbursement officers recently, thus, a cash advance for the salaries could not be made.
Mercado, however, said other GIP enrollees in Negros Oriental have already been paid, but the DOLE is saddled with other paper works for review by its regional office in Region 7 or Central Visayas and they are observing a “first come, first served” policy.
As per records of the DOLE, the GIP budget for Negros Oriental for 2017 is PHP10.550 million, covering 323 students, Mercado disclosed.
The money is to be downloaded from the DOLE regional office to its provincial office.
Mercado added they are now in the process of making arrangements with a courier so they can release the payment of salaries directly to the GIP enrollee as it is risky to be bringing huge sums of money to the different towns and cities in the province where the GIP is being implemented.
The release of payment for GIP beneficiaries for the Dumaguete LGU, most of them working at City Hall, is expected by next week at the earliest, Mercado said. (PNA)
