The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) is set to carry out a major revamp of its line bureaus on Jan. 16, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse M. Robredo said Monday.
Robredo told a press briefing at the DILG Central Office in Quezon City the revamp will effect DILG’s line agencies such as the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) and Local Government Academy (LGA).
However, he declined to identify which officials will be reshuffled or given new assignments.
At the same time, Robredo said he is also eyeing the modernization of all jails in the country as a means to decongest the prison cells as part of the DILG's plans for 2011.
He said the DILG is planning to lease out jails to private contractors, but with BJMP personnel still manning the jails.
"Although the building will be leased by private contractors, it will still be the BJMP which would be in charge of the jails," Robredo said.
"This is a way for us to make our jails more modern and professional," he stressed, adding that the plan is to transfer the jails near the courts, for the convenience and speedy resolution of cases.
