Filipinos in Pakistan are not under any direct threat following the declaration of a state of emergency by military ruler President Pervez Musharraf, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said yesterday.

Claro Cristobal, DFA spokesperson, said the Philippine embassy in Islamabad has taken steps to ensure the safety of around 3,000 Filipinos in that South Asian country.

“The embassy has been instructed to take immediate steps, including the establishment of communication hotlines with the Filipino communities there and to assess and recommend further measures that may be taken to ensure their safety,” he said.

In his report to the DFA, Ambassador to Islamabad Jaime Yambao said the embassy gathered on Saturday Filipino organizations and advised them to take safeguards and precautions.

“The embassy is also coordinating with Asean embassies in Pakistan on measures to assist one another’s nationals in  emergency situations,” he said.

“Thus far, there are no reported direct threats to the safety of Filipinos in Pakistan.”

Filipinos were also told to immediately report to the embassy or the Philippine honorary consuls in Karachi and Lahore of any development affecting their safety, Cristobal said.

President Arroyo yesterday expressed concern over the safety of some 3,000 Filipinos in Pakistan after Musharraf imposed a state of emergency.

“The President has directed (the Department of Foreign Affairs) and the Philippine embassy in Islamabad to closely monitor developments in Pakistan,” Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said in a statement.

“The embassy has been instructed to take immediate steps, including the establishment of communication hotlines with the Filipino communities there and to assess and recommend further measures that may be taken to ensure their safety.”

Meanwhile, the government is not imposing a ban on deployment of  Filipino workers to Pakistan despite the prevailing tension in that country.

“There is no risk or threat on our Filipino workers in Pakistan because it’s just a political problem so we are not considering a ban on deployment of workers,” administrator Marianito Roque of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) said yesterday.

Roque said the government is not also inclined to immediately repatriate Filipino workers from Pakistan.

“Even if we opt to evacuate Filipinos but the government there would not allow us, we cannot do anything about it,” he said. “That is the reality we have to face.”
