Representing President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Presidential Assistant for Western Mindanao Crisanto Dela Cruz inaugurated the P8.8 million communal irrigation system in this southern port of Zamboanga City.
Dela Cruz said the irrigation system located in Barangay Talisayan, 26 kilometers west of this southern port city, was inaugurated last Wednesday.
Dela Cruz said the irrigation project is funded by the national government through the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in coordination with the Department of Agriculture (DA) and local government.
Dela Cruz said the project will benefit the farmer association in Talisayan and in nearby barangays whose planting area covers 100-hectares of palay and other crops.
He advised the members of the farmer association to help preserve, maintain and put to good use the project so that they will continue to reap the benefits it provides to them.
He told the farmers that the project is part of President Arroyo’s priority to ensure stability of food security in the country.
He said with the irrigation project in place, the farmers can now plant rice twice or even thrice a year as they are ensured of steady water supply.
Dela Cruz noted that as he entered Barangay Talisayan, he was welcomed by the beautiful rice fields on both sides of the highway coming from downtown. (PNA)
