Task Force formed to probe Pangasinan barangay chairman's slaying
SAN NICOLAS, Pangasinan, Jan. 11 (PNA)-- The Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO) has formed Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) Mejia to probe the slaying of Calaocan barangay chairman Rolando Seguban Mejia at 7:45 a.m. of January 10, in barangay Calaocan, San Nicolas.
Police Provincial Director Ronald Oliver Lee said Mejia, 59, was shot by a still unidentified suspect on board a motorcycle.
Mejia, who was allegedly active in the campaign against illegal drugs, was on board his own motorcycle that stopped along the road while he was talking with somebody using his cellular phone.
He suffered three gunshot wounds, one on his chest and two in his head.
He was rushed to the Eastern Pangasinan District Hospital in Tayug where was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
The shooting happened at the entrance of the Manzano residence in Barangay Calaocan, beside a barangay road.
Witnesses said while the victim's motorcycle was on a stationary position, the assassin on board a motorcycle came from behind.
The lone rider shot the victim once with the use of Cal. 45 pistol, hitting him in the chest.
Then the suspect alighted from his motorcycle and shot Mejia two times more in the head to finish him off.
Supt. Jackie Candelario, deputy police provincial director, said the motive of the shooting remains unknown but expressed hope SITG Mejia could use the victim's cellular phone retrieved from the crime scene in tracing the killer.
He said two persons, who allegedly witnessed the shooting, are now in protective custody of the police and may provide investigators with the initial description of the suspect.
Elements of SITG Mejia are also talking with the victim's family to find out if he received any death threat before he was killed.
A report said Mejia's active role in the campaign against illegal drugs in his village may have created many enemies who may have wanted him dead. (PNA)
