DAVAO CITY, Aug 10 -- A 17-year-old Dabawenyo got his first taste of victory as Philippines’ bet to the International Geography Olympiad held in Belgrade, Serbia on August 2 to 8.
Dann Lawrence Ilabore, Grade 12 student of Philippine Science High School Southern Mindanao campus bags the bronze medal for team Philippines. Ilabore ranked 67th out of 161 students who participated the yearly competition.
According to Ilabore’s coach, Jefferson Nuṅeza, his student went through a hard time preparing for the competition and even had a joint review session in Philippine Science High School main campus.
“We had review sessions and they were somehow exposed to a field work, we tried to follow the type of exam in the igeo (International Geography),” Nuṅeza said in an interview Wednesday.
“The competition is very challenging for us, especially that in Phil Sci, our curriculum doesn’t include geography, and we, coaches aren’t geography major,” he added.
Ilabore, admitted that winning the Philippine Geography Olympiad was already a sweet victory for him, especially that he lacks background in geography.
“Given the circumstances, and the lack of background and formal education in geography, being here is a success in itself, and wining bronze medal makes this success even sweeter,” he said.
Ilabore excelled in written, response test, field work, and multi-media test that made him bags the sole medal for the team Philippines. The Philippine team was composed of 4 students; however, each student was scored individually. They were Ilabore, Jon Edilpert Morano, Uriel Victor Escobido and Aldwin Adiong.
