BUTUAN CITY – A significant decrease in the number of traffic accidents has been recorded in the Caraga region, the police reported on Saturday.
The region’s public safety index dropped to 648 incidents from January 1 to April 22, from the 988 incidents recorded in the same period in 2019, director of the Police Regional Office (PRO) 13 (Caraga), Brig. Gen. Joselito T. Esquivel Jr., said in a statement.
“This is a significant decrease of 340 incidents or 34.41 percent,” Esquivel said, adding that the public safety index refers to incidents due to traffic accidents, such as reckless imprudence resulting in a homicide, physical injury or damage to property.
He attributed this to the continuing implementation of the enhanced community quarantine by local government units to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Citing data from the Regional Investigation and Detection Management Division (RIDMD) 13, Esquivel took note of the decline in the number of total crime volume from January 1 to April 22, which stood at 2,670, a 9.08 percent decrease from the 2,937 recorded in the same period last year.
“RIDMD-13 recorded a 13.37 percent decrease in total index crimes, from 471 in 2019 down to 408 this year,” he said.
Index crimes, also known as the eight focus crimes, are murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, robbery, theft, car theft, and motorcycle theft.
Esquivel, however, reported a 9.2 percent increase in the number of non-index crimes, such as illegal gambling, in the region – from 1,478 on January 1 to April 22 last year to 1,646 in the same period this year.
“I commend all the men and women of PRO-13 for ensuring the peace and order and public safety in the region despite the global health crisis we are facing today,” he said, adding that the security and safety of Caraga residents are the top priority of the Philippine National Police amid the Covid-19 crisis.
