Manila, Philippines—The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has dismissed a confidential agent who was arrested last week by authorities while receiving P25,000 in cash from a woman applying for a dual citizenship of her grandson.
Immigration chief Marcelino Libanan identified the employee as Bonifacio Carreon, assigned at the bureau’s civil security unit.
Carreon was arrested in an entrapment operation by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation last April 30 inside a coffee shop in front of the BI building in Intramuros, Manila.
Alberto Braganza, BI assistant commissioner for intelligence and security, reported that Carreon was apprehended on the complaint of a certain Erlinda Santos of Pasig City.
Santos alleged that Carreon had demanded P80,000 in return for processing the her grandson’s application for dual citizenship.
Carreon received the total amount in three tranches but Santos said her grandson’s citizenship documents were never processed.
Later, Carreon allegedly demanded another 25,000 prompting Santos to report the matter to the NBI.
