Celebration: Salute to Filipino-Chinese friendship, relationship

June 9 is Filipino-Chinese Friendship Day, pursuant to Proclamation No. 148 issued on January 22, 2002, to commemorate the signing of a joint communiqué that established 40 years ago on June 9, 1975, diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the People’s Republic of China, and to focus on the longtime friendship, strong multifaceted ties, and cultural and economic cooperation between the two countries.
Philippines-China relations began in 200 BC when traders, migrants, and travelers from China sailed on ships manned by Filipino islanders to Asia and the Philippines. Intermarriage between Filipinos and Chinese is among the highest in Southeast Asia.
The first celebration of Filipino-Chinese Friendship Day on June 9, 2002, coinciding with inauguration of the Filipino-Chinese Friendship Bridge and Manila-Beijing Friendship Bridge in Binondo Chinatown. Since then, the annual event has been organized by the Federation of Filipino-Chinese chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc., in partnership with Chinese Filipino Business Club, the Chinese Charitable Association, schools and community groups. Center of festivities is Binondo Chinatown, where cultural shows, dance numbers, musical performances, and trade fairs showcase the rich Chinese culture. A Fil-Chi Race is sponsored by Fil-Chi Cycling Federation.
