MANILA, Philippines - Yet another senator has blamed that he lost a child due to complications caused by the intake of birth control pills by the child's mother.

Sen. Bong Revilla said he cannot, in conscience, vote for the reproductive health bill because he witnessed first-hand the ill effects of taking artificial contraceptives.

Revilla said his wife, actress and Cavite 2nd District Rep. Lani Mercado, gave birth to a girl in 1990. The child died after 26 days due to a heart condition.

"Lani and I lost a daughter due to a complication caused by the use of contraceptive pills. Her name was Maria Alexandra. She was born in 1990 ngunit 26 na araw din siya na buhay. Ipinanganak po siya na butas ang puso," he told fellow senators.

Revilla said that before Mercado gave birth, she was religiously taking birth control pills.

"Hindi lamang po pumalpak yung pills, ipinanganak pa siya na may malubhang karamdaman," he said.

The lawmaker said at least 2 other senators have lost children due to complications caused by the intake of birth control pills.

Sen. Tito Sotto earlier said he lost his second child, Vincent Paul, after he was born with a weak heart and needed blood transfusions every day.

Revilla noted that the senators' children who died allegedly due to side effects of birth control pills all seemed to have heart defects.


She drew laughter from the Senate gallery after saying that she is “seriously contemplating the passage of a bill that will make it punishable under the Penal Code for a husband to give unsatisfying sex to his wife.”

Sotto then replied: “Definitely, I will not be guilty of that, Mr. President.”

Sen. Pia Cayetano, one of the authors of the bill, said the phrase simply means that a woman “has the right to be intimate and enjoy her personal relations with her husband.”

“I have the right to safe and satisfying sex. I have consulted my colleague, Sen. Loren [Legarda], and she also feels the same way. We have three Filipinas in this hall that demand the right to safe and satisfying sex and all we are asking is that every Filipina in this country be honored with that right,” she said.

“We are not asking that it be defined. Ano ho yun? But we are acknowledging the fact that that is a right we have,” she added.

She also quoted her brother, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, when the phrase became a contentious issue in the previous debate.

Sotto then replied: “Definitely, I will not be guilty of that, Mr. President.”

Legarda admitted painful and forced sex can happen even between married persons.

“Karapatan ng asawa na ipagtanggol ang kanyang sarili kaya yan ang ibig sabihin ng katagang yun,” she said.

Sen. Jinggoy Estrada ruled the proposal was out of order since the proposed amendment had already been rejected in the last debate.

Sotto then proposed that he be included in the bicameral committee that would consolidate the final versions of the RH bill if passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives.

“Kung yung sin tax bill nadali natin sa bicam, e di pwede din nating madali ito,” he said

corny.  what a self-engrossed discussion-- satisfying sex but not the right to be born-- from supposed statesmen who ought to know that their vote could change or not the identity and values of a nation.  maayo pa mag-ofw na lang tang tanan.  biyaan na lang nato na sila.  kubkob na lang tag ato somewhere where our labors are given worth in terms of pay.  di na lang kaha ta manghilabot because we get more conceit than sense from such elected officials.
