Classes suspended in Cotabato due to bad weather
« on: May 18, 2020, 02:01:01 PM »
COTABATO CITY -- Local officials here and in nearby towns in North Cotabato suspended on Wednesday afternoon classes due to heavy rains brought about by a Low Pressure Area that is affecting Central and Western Mindanao areas.

Aniceto Rasalan, secretary to Cotabato City Mayor Cynthia Guiani-Sayadi, said the city government decided to suspend classes in the afternoon to safeguard school children.

Rasalan said classes have been suspended from kindergarten, elementary and high school levels both in public and private institutions.

Torrential rains coupled with strong winds also triggered power interruption in the city for about an hour when trees touched high-tension cables of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines.

Rasalan added that village officials and residents living near rivers and tributaries have been reminded to immediately evacuate if the water level continued to rise.

In Pigcawayan, North Cotabato, the local government also suspended classes in elementary and high school levels due to floods affecting low-lying areas.

In Maguindanao, the office of Governor Esmael Mangudadatu left the decision to suspend classes to school officials and local executives.

Mangudadatu also reminded residents living near the 220,000 - hectare Liguasan Marsh to be ready for evacuation should the water level of Rio Grande de Mindanao rises to critical level.

Residents living in coastal areas of Maguindanao are prompted for possible water surge or tidal waves as winds from the west are moving relatively strong toward mainland Maguindanao.

The governor also reminded residents in the upland towns to be cautious about possible landslides due to incessant rains.

Light to moderate rains have been hitting Maguindanao since Tuesday night due to the LPA.

PAGASA, in a statement, said the LPA would bring scattered light to moderate with possible occasional heavy rains over Palawan, Zamboanga Peninsula, Lanao and Maguindanao provinces. Sea travel is unsafe over the eastern seaboard of Visayas and of Mindanao due to Tropical Storm Paolo. (PNA)
