CALAMBA CITY, Laguna -- Knee to hip-deep floodwaters and continuous heavy rains drenching the Calabarzon region have prompted local governments here to suspend classes in all level in both public and private schools on Tuesday.
State weather bureau PAGASA forecast said southwest monsoon rains or “habagat” induced by a severe tropical storm “Isang” (international codename “Hato”) are flogging the Calabarzon region comprising Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon.
Regional Director Olivia M. Luces of Calabarzon Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) has directed provincial, city and municipal risk reduction and management offices (DRRMOs) to conduct continuous monitoring and coordination with RDRRMC member-agencies on the situation in their respective areas.
Classes in all levels -- public and private schools -- in Rizal province covering the towns of Binangonan, Cainta, San Mateo, Rodriquez, Taytay, Morong, Angono, Tanay and Teresa and Antipolo City were also suspended.
Also, in the towns of Cardona and Baras, classes were canceled from pre-school to senior high school.
In Laguna, Calamba City and San Pedro City have suspended classes in all levels in both public and private schools while Cavite province declared the suspension of classes in all levels.
Meanwhile, Cavite Governor Jesus Crispin Remulla also suspended classes in all levels Tuesday as many students in the coastal areas will be severely affected by the expected high tide and the continuous rains drenching the province.
“The no classes apply as well to teachers and professors, as no one is waterproof,” Remulla said.
Despite the no extreme rainfall warning, Remulla decided to suspend classes as a preventive approach to ensure the safety of his constituents, especially those in the low-lying and coastal areas which experience flooding due to high tide.
Seven municipalities like Rosario, Tanza, Noveleta, Naic, Ternate, Maragondon and Kawit and the cities of Bacoor and Cavite with around 316 barangays are located along the Cavite coast.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration issued its rainfall warning 7 a.m. Tuesday for the Calabarzon region which advised that flooding is possible in low-lying areas and near river channels and has alerted community preparedness and response in the wake of possible flooding.
Luces also advised dissemination of advisories and announcements via social media such as Facebook and Twitter and SMART info board.
The Department of Interior and Local Government-Calabarzon has also tasked LGUs here for continuous dissemination of weather updates thru SMS and social media networks to the local DRRMOs and DILG Field officers.
According to the OCD/RDRRMC, there were no reported incidents, casualty or affected population as of posting time.
All national roads and bridges are passable and the region’s ports are under normal operations with no untoward incidents monitored as of 12 noon Tuesday.
Calabarzon provinces through their DRRMOs have activated their Operations Centers 24/7 for monitoring and updates on their provincial situations which include suspension of classes and road conditions. (With Gladys Señires-Pino/PNA)
