ILOILO CITY -- Provincial governments are encouraged to enact a road safety ordinance to integrate laws that mandate the use of helmet and seat belt, discourage overspeeding and the anti-distracted driving act to prevent road accidents.
Dr. Mary Ann Sta. Lucia, Department of Health regional violence and injury prevention alliance (VIPA) coordinator for Western Visayas, who attended the Global Road Safety Leadership Course in the United States on July 30 to August 11, 2017, said the DOH has intensified its road safety advocacy.
Under the VIPA in Western Visayas, the Land Transportation Office (LTO), Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Iloilo City Transportation Management and Traffic Regulation Office (TMTRO) and Iloilo City have convened to look into road safety management issues, she said.
However, the attitude of drivers remains to be a problem and this is one factor that cannot be changed overnight, she added.
She said the provinces of Iloilo, Guimaras and Antique have already crafted their own ordinances on road safety while it is being deliberated in Aklan.
Negros Occidental is inviting VIPA in November for a discussion on the passage of the ordinance.
Western Visayas is among five regions in the country with the highest cases of road accidents,
according to the online national electronic injury surveillance system (ONEISS). (PNA)
